The goal of the jam is to bring all of the local coffee communities together for a celebration of Boston's giant leaps and bounds in the coffee industry over the last few years. (And, of course, to entertain some friendly barista competitions). While the event is free to attend, the entrance fee for each competition is 5$. All proceeds are being donated to Coffee Kids, a charity based organization that helps coffee-growing families improve their quality of living.
Here's the breakdown of the event:
Coffee Tasting Competition
- A triangulation-based tasting hosted by Atomic Cafe Coffee Roasters, this event requires competitors to separate one "odd" brewed coffee from two similar coffees. The event has three rounds and is judged on your correct choice and competition time. Descriptions of the coffees will be given before-hand and does not require that you have already tasted them before.
Espresso Throwdown
- This is a sensory-based competition hosted by Barismo, with competitors pulling up to three shots and serving one to the judges. Competitors will be given a description of the espresso blend's taste profile, as well as the recommended dose and other factors. You will be judged on your ability to duplicate the profile based on your adjustments and evaluation.
Latte Pour Competition
- This event is hosted by ERC and is not judged on taste or espresso technique. Competitors are allowed one attempt to pour into any size cup they choose, with up to two shots (one basket) of espresso. Judging is based on the latte art's color, definition and creativity. Etching, or any manipulation to the drink beyond pour technique is not allowed.
As well as the competitions, there will be food and drink available to all who attend!
Winners of each competition will be presented with prizes sponsored by Hario, MEM Tea Imports, and several more.
Remember, this is free and open to the public so don't be shy...
