Feeling like political talk these days is filled with hyperbole and hatred, rather than genuine discussion and debate?
Here's something refreshing... an evening of engaging discussion in the spirit of Adams, Jefferson and Lincoln. Join us as we tackle some of the nation’s most controversial issues, featuring some of the country's best collegiate debate teams - from Harvard, MIT, Boston College, and Boston University.
The topics to be discussed include:
Health care reform
Don't ask don't tell
Escalation in Afghanistan
Nuclear energy
Stay informed -- Get the background on each topic BEFORE the event
Debatepedia's comprehensive pro/con articles on each topic will put you in-the-know at a time when information is power. This will make for a much deeper and informed debate, and will allow you, our registered guests, to follow with a higher degree of scrutiny. In addition, new arguments will be introduced into Debatepedia's articles during and after the event, allowing our guests to examine new arguments that might affect their final position.
The National Debate Series will consist of a mini tournament - British Parliamentary style - between Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, and MIT. There are only two rounds - a semi-finals and finals - and three debates, each on a separate topic of importance to US foreign and domestic policy. Following this mini-tournament, NDBS will host a single debate between two high profile political leaders. The event will last three hours in total from 7 to 10pm.- 6:30 - Doors open.
- 7:00-7:10 - Introduction by the hosts of the National Debate Series, from Debatepedia and Politalk.
- 7:10-7:40 - First debate between MIT and Boston University.
- 7:45-8:15 - Second debate between Harvard and Boston College.
- 8:30-9:00 - Third debate between the winners of the first two.
- 9:05-9:35 - Debate between two political figures.
- 9:35-9:55 - Questions from the audience.
- 9:55-10:00 - Closing remarks
- 10:00 - ? - Informal after party to be announced at the event
